John 2:13-22

A hymn by Charles Wesley begins, "Gentle Jesus, meek and mild, look upon a little child..." It’s a beautiful song with a beautiful thought. However, Jesus is anything but gentle and mild in John chapter two. Here in the temple at Jerusalem, He displays His righteous anger as He overturns tables and beats the religious businesspeople with whips! But Jesus was using this trouble in the temple to predict a greater sign—the triumph of His own physical temple—His bodily resurrection!

13	Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
14	And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the moneychangers doing business.
15	When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers' money and overturned the tables.
16	And He said to those who sold doves, "Take these things away! Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise!"
17	Then His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up."
18	So the Jews answered and said to Him, "What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?"
19	Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."
20	Then the Jews said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?"
21	But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
22	Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.

What is it?</li><li>Why did Jesus refer to His physical body as a temple?</li></ol></p> <p><strong>DETAILED NOTES </strong></p> <p><p>Five times in the text the word temple is used. 2 times the word house is used referring to the temple. So seven total times "temple" is referenced, but of these, two times Jesus is speaking of His body. While the Jews are thinking of construction, Jesus changes the conversation and is speaking of resurrection. Both are important signs, driving them out and the resurrection, and they are related. It's all about believing. What happened in the temple caused His disciples to believe in Him. Jesus single handedly drove out the group and their animals. The disciples may have thought  He is unpredictable. He has left the wedding at Cana where he brought joy, and now He is angry. It is his first public appearance on spiritual grounds and He doesn't read the Bible, He beats the merchandisers with a whip.</p><ol type="I"> <li>The Sign in the Temple -- A historical Building Vss. 13-20 <ol type="A"> <li>His Passion for Reverence<ol><li>Passover - The greatest of Jewish feasts, commemorating their deliverance from Egypt.<ol type="a"> <li>Jerusalem crowded <ol type="i"><li>All male Jews within 15 mile of the city were required to be there </li><li>Lifelong dream of the Jews to be there</li><li>Jesus came south 90 miles from Capernaum</li><li>256,000 lambs sacrificed according to Josephus (10:1 ratio people:lambs = 2.5 million) </li> </ol> </li> <li>Huge event <ol type="i"><li>Residents were required to open their homes to visitors and forbidden to charge rent</li><li>People would camp out around the temple</li><li>4 weeks prior to Passover the teaching in the Synagogue would lead up to Passover</li><li>The women would prepare their homes</li> </ol> </li> <li>1 day festival on the 14 day of Nisan</li> <li>Followed by 7 day Festival of Unleavened Bread</li></ol></li><li>Corruption<ol type="a"> <li>Those who sold - tous polountas the sellers, everyone knew them <ol type="i"><li>Money changers would charge exorbitant fees - 2 hours wage just to exchange money, and another 2 hours wage for each ½ shekel exchanged</li><li>Inspectors would determine clean animals from unclean animals and require people to purchase new ones for sacrifice</li> </ol> </li> <li>Worshipers with pure hearts were being charged to worship God</li></ol></li><li>Jesus drove them out<ol type="a"> <li>Jesus is angry</li> <li>Jesus exercises his rightful authority as Messiah over the temple</li> <li>God's wrath <ol type="i"><li>According to Arthur W. 1. Upreach
We believe that loving God is man's highest calling and our relationship to Him is our highest priority. All ministry flows out of this relationship.

2. Inreach
As members of a spiritual family, we seek to equip one another for service and to grow to spiritual maturity. Thus, we seek to be trained according to the Bible, which we believe is the "owner's manual" for our lives.

3. Outreach
Our desire is to go out beyond the "Christian camp" into the world to expand the kingdom of God through evangelism. We believe God has given every Christian a "sphere of influence" in which to make an impact for Christ.

Our Beliefs

We Believe that there is one living and true GOD, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; this triune God created all, upholds all, and governs all.

We Believe that the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired, without error in the original manuscripts, and the infallible rule of faith and practice.

We Believe in God the Father, an infinite, personal Spirit, perfect in Holiness, wisdom, power, and love; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through faith in Jesus Christ.

We Believe in Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit.

We Believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, and teaching, His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people, and personal, visible return to earth.

We Believe in the Holy Spirit, who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment; and to regenerate, sanctify and empower all that believe in Jesus Christ for ministry.

We Believe that the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, and Guide.

We Believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all the Biblical gifts of the Holy Spirit.

We Believe that all people are sinners by nature and choice and, therefore, are under condemnation; that God regenerates by the Holy Spirit, those who repent of their sins and confess Jesus Christ as Lord.

We Believe that Jesus Christ baptizes the seeking believer with the Holy Spirit and empowers the believers for service, often subsequent to regeneration.

We Believe in the universal church, the living spiritual body, of which Christ is the head, and all regenerated persons are members.

We Believe that Jesus committed two ordinances to the church: 1) Baptism and, 2) the Lord's Supper. We believe in baptism by immersion and communion open to all believers.

We Believe also in the laying on of hands for baptism of the Holy Spirit, for ordination of pastors, elders, and deacons, and receiving from the Holy Spirit through the believer the gift of healing.

We Believe in the personal, visible return of Christ to the earth and the establishing of His Kingdom, in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment and eternal blessing of the righteous, and the endless suffering of the wicked.

We Believe in what is termed the Apostles Creed as embodying the fundamental facts of Christian faith.
