John 3:1-8

The meeting of Jesus and Nicodemus at night is one of the most famous and compelling stories in Scripture. This man's inner curiosity and spiritual thirst drove him to want to know more. What he heard puzzled and astonished him, but he heard from Jesus' own lips the only way to be saved. Jesus' words here divide all of humanity into two groups: those who are born again and those who are not.

1	There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
2	This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him."
3	Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
4	Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"
5	Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
6	"That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7	"Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'
8	"The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."

Have you been?</li></ol></p> <p><strong>DETAILED NOTES </strong></p> <p><ol type="I"> <li><strong>Spiritual Curiosity (vv. 1-2) </strong> <ol type="A"> <li>The Man Named Nicodemus -<ol><li>Religious -Pharisee - pledged to keep all of the law.  Not just the first 5 books of the Bible, but the oral law as well; the Mishnah and the Talmud</li><li>Rich - according to the Talmud one of four richest men in Jerusalem.  Brought the myrrh and aloes when Jesus was buried.</li><li>Ruler - His name is Greek, means "victor over the people."  Ruler, archon in Greek. He was "the" teacher in Israel. One of the most famous,  sought after lecturers.</li></ol> </li> <li>The Meeting at Night<ol><li>Could be a lot of reasons he came at night. <ol type="a"> <li>fear</li> <li>sin</li> <li>Probably for quality time with Jesus.</li> </ol></li><li>He came. - Not so important why he came, but that he came. (when you are in pain, distress, or loneliness, you are more aware of your need.  We should be glad when people come, whatever the motive.) <ol type="a"> <li>Nicodemus called Jesus, "Rabbi." He thought he was being respectful, making Jesus an equal, he doesn't yet know who Jesus is.</li> <li>"we" know-a group including himself and perhaps others sympathetic to Jesus and considering whether He is Messiah.</li> <li>Jesus had been in Jerusalem doing signs. Nicodemus witnessed that. He saw that Jesus knew the truth as he had never known.  Nicodemus curiosity brought him to Jesus.</li> </ol></li></ol> </li> </ol> </li> <li><strong>Eternal Necessity </strong>(<strong>vv</strong>.<strong> 3-6</strong>) Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom.  Jesus answers the question that Nicodemus didn't ask. Jesus knew what was in man. "Most assuredly" is our clue that these are important word. <ol type="A"> <li>The Meaning of the New Birth<ol><li>New life, second chance.</li><li>Not merely another protestant sect.</li><li>Gennethe anothen - <ol type="a"> <li>born from above</li> <li>born a second time</li> </ol></li><li>Nicodemus and other Jews believed that the only birth needed was the first birth.  To be Jewish and to keep the law. But keeping the law and good works were not enough.</li><li>To have new life, you need a new birth.</li><li>You are born spiritually dead. (Ephesians 2:1)</li><li>Jesus doesn't reform you; He transforms you.</li></ol> </li> <li>The Method of the New Birth -born of water and the spirit<ol><li>Doesn't mean baptismal regeneration. <ol type="a"> <li>Nicodemus couldn't have understood New Testament baptism.</li> <li>Jesus didn't baptize anyone</li> </ol></li><li>Spiritual cleansing- Old Testament description of being spiritually cleansed. Ezekiel 36.</li><li>Physical birth followed by Spiritual birth. <ol type="a"> <li>"born of water" physical birth</li> <li>"born of the spirit" spiritual birth</li> <li>First birth necessary for physical life</li> <li>Second birth necessary for spiritual life</li> </ol></li></ol> </li> </ol> </li> <li><strong>Observable Activity (vv. 7-8)</strong> <ol type="A"> <li>The Wind Changes Places -can't see it, but the effects of it are plainly observable. </li> <li>The Spirit Changes People - When a person is born again the changes are observable.<br> Pneuma is the word for wind and spirit.  Same word.<br> Jesus said you MUST be born again. We believe that loving God is man's highest calling and our relationship to Him is our highest priority. All ministry flows out of this relationship.

2. Inreach
As members of a spiritual family, we seek to equip one another for service and to grow to spiritual maturity. Thus, we seek to be trained according to the Bible, which we believe is the "owner's manual" for our lives.

3. Outreach
Our desire is to go out beyond the "Christian camp" into the world to expand the kingdom of God through evangelism. We believe God has given every Christian a "sphere of influence" in which to make an impact for Christ.

Our Beliefs

We Believe that there is one living and true GOD, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; this triune God created all, upholds all, and governs all.

We Believe that the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired, without error in the original manuscripts, and the infallible rule of faith and practice.

We Believe in God the Father, an infinite, personal Spirit, perfect in Holiness, wisdom, power, and love; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through faith in Jesus Christ.

We Believe in Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit.

We Believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, and teaching, His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people, and personal, visible return to earth.

We Believe in the Holy Spirit, who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment; and to regenerate, sanctify and empower all that believe in Jesus Christ for ministry.

We Believe that the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, and Guide.

We Believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all the Biblical gifts of the Holy Spirit.

We Believe that all people are sinners by nature and choice and, therefore, are under condemnation; that God regenerates by the Holy Spirit, those who repent of their sins and confess Jesus Christ as Lord.

We Believe that Jesus Christ baptizes the seeking believer with the Holy Spirit and empowers the believers for service, often subsequent to regeneration.

We Believe in the universal church, the living spiritual body, of which Christ is the head, and all regenerated persons are members.

We Believe that Jesus committed two ordinances to the church: 1) Baptism and, 2) the Lord's Supper. We believe in baptism by immersion and communion open to all believers.

We Believe also in the laying on of hands for baptism of the Holy Spirit, for ordination of pastors, elders, and deacons, and receiving from the Holy Spirit through the believer the gift of healing.

We Believe in the personal, visible return of Christ to the earth and the establishing of His Kingdom, in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment and eternal blessing of the righteous, and the endless suffering of the wicked.

We Believe in what is termed the Apostles Creed as embodying the fundamental facts of Christian faith.
