For years ABC has aired two different versions of a show called Extreme Makeover. One is a total body makeover designed to enhance the physical beauty of a selected individual. The other is a Home Edition that rebuilds or adds to a struggling family's residence. But only Jesus can give the soul a makeover; only Jesus can ready a person for eternity. Here Jesus answers Nicodemus' question of how a person can have the New Life that comes from the New Birth.

9	Nicodemus answered and said to Him, "How can these things be?"
10	Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?
11	"Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness.
12	"If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
13	"No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.
14	"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
15	"that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
16	"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
17	"For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18	"He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19	"And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20	"For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
21	"But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God."

What do these verses make you want to do?</li></ol></p> <p><strong>DETAILED NOTES </strong></p> <p>Nicodemus is grown and has lived his life with the outward things in order.  His question, "How can these things be? How on earth can things like this happen?"  turns the conversation from a dialogue to a discourse.  We learn how a man can be born again.<ol type="I"> <li><strong>The Source of New Life: </strong><strong><em>Heaven </em></strong>(<strong>vv. 9-13</strong>) <ol type="A"> <li>New life is possible because Jesus Christ, who is life, brought it down from heaven.</li> <li>It is impossible for man to reach the new life.<ol><li>We are in the time and space continuum.</li><li>We cannot escape the natural to reach the supernatural.</li><li>Religion is man's attempt to reach into heaven, and it won't work because the natural cannot peer into the supernatural.</li></ol> </li> <li>God has to come into the natural.</li> <li>Either take what He said or we are stuck. </li> <li>Most people would rather reach up from earth than take what is handed down from heaven.</li> </ol> </li> <li><strong>The Force of New Life: </strong><strong><em>Atonement </em></strong>(<strong>vv. 14-17</strong>) <ol type="A"> <li>The atoning death of Christ</li> <li>The force behind the new life is death</li> <li> Someone has to die enabling others to live (New Testament theme, we live because Christ died, 1 Peter)</li> <li> Jesus predicted His death to Nicodemus</li> <li> Wilderness serpent (Numbers 21) - The complaining Israelites complained against God about the manna, the venomous snakes were sent and thousands died.  To be saved they had to look to the brass serpent lifted up in the desert and they had to believe.<ol><li>They had to believe they were sinners.</li><li>They had to believe it was going to work, have faith.</li></ol> </li> <li>It is easier for us to look to ourselves than to admit we are sinners needing a savior.</li> <li>Must - it is a divine imperative. Calvary is a Christian fellowship where we gather for the purpose of knowing and glorifying Jesus Christ. We desire to see all people become committed to live as followers of Jesus Christ.

1. Upreach
We believe that loving God is man's highest calling and our relationship to Him is our highest priority. All ministry flows out of this relationship.

2. Inreach
As members of a spiritual family, we seek to equip one another for service and to grow to spiritual maturity. Thus, we seek to be trained according to the Bible, which we believe is the "owner's manual" for our lives.

3. Outreach
Our desire is to go out beyond the "Christian camp" into the world to expand the kingdom of God through evangelism. We believe God has given every Christian a "sphere of influence" in which to make an impact for Christ.

Our Beliefs

We Believe that there is one living and true GOD, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; this triune God created all, upholds all, and governs all.

We Believe that the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired, without error in the original manuscripts, and the infallible rule of faith and practice.

We Believe in God the Father, an infinite, personal Spirit, perfect in Holiness, wisdom, power, and love; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through faith in Jesus Christ.

We Believe in Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit.

We Believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, and teaching, His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people, and personal, visible return to earth.

We Believe in the Holy Spirit, who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment; and to regenerate, sanctify and empower all that believe in Jesus Christ for ministry.

We Believe that the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, and Guide.

We Believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all the Biblical gifts of the Holy Spirit.

We Believe that all people are sinners by nature and choice and, therefore, are under condemnation; that God regenerates by the Holy Spirit, those who repent of their sins and confess Jesus Christ as Lord.

We Believe that Jesus Christ baptizes the seeking believer with the Holy Spirit and empowers the believers for service, often subsequent to regeneration.

We Believe in the universal church, the living spiritual body, of which Christ is the head, and all regenerated persons are members.

We Believe that Jesus committed two ordinances to the church: 1) Baptism and, 2) the Lord's Supper. We believe in baptism by immersion and communion open to all believers.

We Believe also in the laying on of hands for baptism of the Holy Spirit, for ordination of pastors, elders, and deacons, and receiving from the Holy Spirit through the believer the gift of healing.

We Believe in the personal, visible return of Christ to the earth and the establishing of His Kingdom, in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment and eternal blessing of the righteous, and the endless suffering of the wicked.

We Believe in what is termed the Apostles Creed as embodying the fundamental facts of Christian faith.
